They say that the best things in life are free.
Things that are not Free that we Take for Granted
Apart from our basic necessities of food, clothing and shelter, we tend to take a lot of things for granted. Can you imagine a life without electricity? Also, what about not having good plumbing and running water? Just consider the sheer convenience of opening a tap and having water flow through. Conversely, some people have to go to a nearby river to fetch water for their daily needs.
Other things that we take for granted include the convenience of transportation and internet service. Some people feel very uneasy when they do not have their mobile phones with them or when they lack internet service. Evidently, the fear of missing out is very real. Others have taken to living digital lives.
5 Amazing Free Things We Should Crave
Granted the convenience of the things listed above which are not free, the best things in life are indeed free!
1. Good Health
They say that your health is your wealth. Hence, we save all the money that we do not spend on treating a disease. Engaging in an active lifestyle, eating and sleeping well will generally ensure good health, barring any underlying health condition. Good health is free!
2. Good Sleep
There is nothing as refreshing as good sleep! You wake up feeling so rejuvenated. Unfortunately, some people have insomnia and have to take sleeping pills in order to catch a few winks.
It is interesting to note that sleeping well does not depend on your surroundings or on what your money can afford. You can be lying on a king-size bed in a plush hotel with an enchanting ambience. However, sleep can elude you. On the other hand, a poor, tired labourer, who may not be able to afford such a luxurious experience, may sleep very well under the shade of a tree in the hot, scorching sun. Good sleep is free!
3. Freedom of Movement
I read somewhere that when you wake up in the morning, you should be grateful to God that the lock is on the inside of the door, and not otherwise. In other words, that you are not a prisoner and that you can move to wherever you choose. Is that not priceless? It is unfortunate that some people are wrongfully imprisoned for crimes they did not commit. However, in as much as it depends on us, we should strive to be law-abiding in order to not end up within the four walls of a prison and thereby lose our freedom of movement.
4. Someone to Talk to
As they say, no man is an island onto himself. Having someone to talk to and to share your joys and problems with, is free. Although one can pay a psychologist to listen to one’s challenges, that is a business transaction. That can not be compared to the genuine warmth and care shown by a friend or a family member. Such a friend or family member may call to check up on you out of genuine concern for you. Such love or affection cannot be bought and is free.
5. A Sense of Purpose
Last but not the least, having a sense of purpose is free. When you have a sense of purpose, you look forward to each new day with anticipation. This is because you know that you have a role to play on earth. You are therefore more focused and more driven than the average person who is just browsing through life. As such, you achieve more in whatever field or vocation that you are engaged in and you are more fulfilled. This is free, you just have to discover it.
In conclusion, we certainly need food, clothing and shelter to survive. Other amenities such as electricity, plumbing and the internet, among others, indeed make our lives more comfortable. However, good health, good sleep, freedom of movement, having someone to talk to and having a sense of purpose are all amazing things in life. And they are free!
I think that we should all crave these things. Do you have any additions to the list? Kindly indicate them in your comments. You may comment by clicking on the chat icon underneath the heading.
