How to maximise experiences: First snow in Flagstaff, Arizona

The Sight of Snow

I saw snow for the first time in my life in 2023 after seeing it for years only on television, in movies, on the Internet, and in pictures!

Living in Ghana, West Africa, snow was not part of my life.  Unfortunately, all of my trips to Europe and other temperate climates were during summer.  Thus, when I travelled to Arizona in March in 2023, I thought it was a good time to make an effort to see snow with my naked eyes.

There was not much snow where I was staying in Chandler, Phoenix, as most of it had thawed. Thus,  I arranged with a friend to make a day’s road trip to Flagstaff, where there was still snow. Although this required extra effort and additional expenses, I was determined to see it and was not bothered by any challenges that confronted me.

When we finally got there, I was brimming with excitement.  I could finally see, breathe, and touch snow! And take pictures for posterity! What if this was the first and last time that I ever saw snow? I intended to enjoy every part of the experience.

Maximisation of Experiences

When I previously complained to a friend that I hadn’t seen snow before, she asked me what value it would add to my life.  That set me thinking.  Why did I want to see snow?

I wanted to see it because I had never seen it before. In keeping with my wish to get out of my comfort zone and prioritise adventure,  if there was a chance to see it, I was determined to make it happen!

I know that there are people who may have never travelled out of where they live.  However, travelling is an education in itself. As St. Augustine said, “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.”

There are also others who set in their ways and who have no interest in trying out new things.  A disinterest in new experiences makes us older than we really are. You are only as old as your mindset.

We should endeavour to enjoy every moment of life and to maximise our experiences.  This could entail travelling to a village to sample village life. It could also consist of trying to cook a new recipe. We could spend time with a child and get a renewed sense of excitement about life.  We could also visit the zoo to see in person animals that we have never seen before.

All said and done, we should strive to do something that we have never done before. Life is short.  You only live once.

I love your article, madam! Even though people may discourage you, you must pursue your own happiness and delight. Trying new things brings great lessons, joyous moments, and fresh ideas; they build confidence and long-lasting memories too. Let’s enjoy life together!
